– August 10, 1980: Backlund and Morales agreed to relinquish the championship to pursue individual goals. A tournament was held to determine the new champions.

Lou Albano) defeated Chief Jay & Jules Strongbow to win the vacant WWF Tag Team Championship in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match at 8:56; fall #1 – Fuji pinned Jules at the 38-second mark after thowing salt into both he and Chief Jay’s face while Saito distracted the referee; fall #2 – Fuji submitted to Jules’ sleeper at 6:42; fall #3 – Saito pinned Jay after Albano interfered and hit Jay with a foreign object when the referee was distracted by Fuji & Jules; after the bout, Pat Patterson attempted to interview the new champions, but they were attacked by the Strongbows and eventually cleared from ringside; the Strongbows then staged a sit-down strike in the ring, delaying the next match from taking place, until Gorilla Monsoon came to the ring and eventually convinced them to leave ringside

– The Harts “lost” the titles to Jacques & Raymond Rougeau on 8/10/87 at the Montreal Forum but the belts were later returned due to Jimmy Hart’s megaphone being used in the outcome of the contest. The match was never mentioned on WWF TV but footage did air during local TV news coverage.

– June 1990: Demolition introduced a third member named Crush and began defending the championship with any random two of the three members participating, turning themselves heel in the process.
