Eddie Gilbert defeated NWA US Champion Barry Windham (w/ JJ Dillon) via disqualification in a non-title match at around the 13-minute mark when NWA World Champion Ric Flair, who appeared ringside early in the match, attacked Gilbert and – with Windham – double teamed him; after the bout, Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone interviewed Dillon at ringside in which Dillon said Gilbert’s name could be added to the list of their other victims – Dusty Rhodes, Bam Bam Bigelow, Sting, and others
Michael Hayes pinned Paul Lee with the DDT at 3:11; during the bout, Steve Casey appeared at ringside; after the match, Ross interviewed Hayes & the Junkyard Dog about their newfound team, going after the NWA US Tag Team Titles, and JYD facing Flair for the title the following week in St. Louis
NWA US Tag Team Champions Kevin Sullivan & Steve Williams (w/ Mike Rotunda) defeated Randy Hogan & Mike Collins at 3:57 when Williams pinned Collins with the Oklahoma Stampede; after the bout, Schiavone interviewed the Varsity Club during which Sullivan challenged NWA Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors and Rotunda said he would reclaim the NWA TV title later in the show
NWA Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) defeated Dale Laparouse & Mike Jackson at the 40-second mark when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Laparouse with the Doomsday Device; after the bout, Laparouse was taken backstage on a stretcher as Schiavone interviewed the champions regarding the challenge issued earlier in the show by Kevin Sullivan & Steve Williams, during which Road Warrior Animal said he and Hawk had found someone to share their NWA 6-Man Tag Team Titles – Genichiro Tenryu

NWA Western States Champion Larry Zbyzsko & Al Perez (w/ Gary Hart & Abdullah the Butcher) defeated George South & Curtis Thompson at 2:50 when Perez pinned South with the Alicopter; after the bout, Schiavone interviewed Hart, Zbyzsko, & Perez in which Hart said his men were targetting NWA World Champion Ric Flair and mentioned an upcoming match between Flair and Perez in Florida; Zbyzsko then said in 1980 he retired one legend, in 1987 he retired another, and now he was looking to retire Flair

4/29/89 – featured Jim Ross conducting an opening interview with Ric Flair, surrounded by several women, in which Ross said Flair would be wrestling on the following week’s show; Flair said he was celebrating his NWA World Title win early and cut a promo on facing Ricky Steamboat for the title at Music City Showdown; moments later, Steamboat appeared and reminded Flair he only has one more shot; included the Iron Sheik, with Rip Morgan, and NWA TV Champion Sting competing in swinging the Persian clubs; after Sheik demonstrated how to swing the clubs, Sting asked to be shown two more times so he would be sure how to do it; Sting then said Sheik was the best at swinging the clubs but he would still beat him at Music City Showdown; featured Ross conducting an interview with Steamboat regarding his upcoming match against Flair, with Flair then interrupting and saying he would be the next world champion and would win the belt back so he could continue to afford his lifestyle:

Ron Simmons pinned the Junkyard Dog at 2:44 by shoving JYD out of the corner and referee Teddy Long making a fast count; after the bout, Ross conducted an interview with WCW Executive Vice President Jim Herd in which Herd said Long was suspended following the Clash of the Champions from officiating any title matches; Herd then said, due to Long’s officiating in this match, he was fired as a referee

Dangerously) defeated George South & Greg Evans at around the 3-minute mark when Fatu pinned Evans with the splash off the top; during the bout, it was announced the Dynamic Dudes would debut the following week and Steve Williams would face Road Warrior Animal in a “Designated Hitter” match, though Ross didn’t know what that was; it was also announced the SST would face the Dudes as part of Music City Showdown
Michael Hayes (w/ Hiro Matsuda) pinned Steve Casey with the DDT at 2:04; prior to the bout, Ross conducted an interview with NWA US Champion Lex Luger in which they made mention of Hayes recently scoring a pin on Luger in Chicago after hitting him with brass knuckles and spoke of Luger facing Hayes at Music City Showdown

Ric Flair (w/ Hiro Matsuda) defeated Dwayne Bruce via submission with the figure-4 at 4:02; prior to the bout, Ross conducted an interview with NWA World Champion Ricky Steamboat regarding his match the next day against Flair at Music City Showdown; Steamboat provided guest commentary for the match; during the bout, Ross mentioned Steamboat and Flair being able to wrestle rather than posing or trying to cover a bald spot, as a reference to Hulk Hogan

Dangerously then appeared, said the Samoan Swat Team would be the next champions, mentioned the Fantastics and the Midnight Express as teams the SST had run off, and then challenged the Road Warriors to face the SST the following week in the quarter-finals of the NWA Tag Team Championship tournament; included footage of Funk’s attack on Flair at Music City Showdown and the piledriver onto the ringside table; featured Ross conducting an interview with Funk about his actions in which Funk said he was just beating Flair to the punch and claimed Flair was not injured but was simply scared (Funk received a babyface reaction for the promo); included footage of the finishes from the Michael Hayes vs. Lex Luger, Sting vs. Iron Sheik, Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat, Road Warriors vs. Steve Williams & Mike Rotunda, and Rick Steiner & Eddie Gilbert vs. Kevin Sullivan & Dan Spivey matches at Music City Showdown; featured Ross conducting an interview with Jim Herd about the vacancy of the NWA Tag Team championship and the tournament which would begin the following week; the brackets were then announced as the Road Warriors vs. the Freebirds, the New Zealand Militia vs. the Dynamic Dudes, the Midnight Express vs. Butch Reed & Bob Orton Jr., and the Samoan Swat Team vs. Ranger Ross & Ron Simmons, with the finals being held at the Clash of the Champions June 14; moments later, as Ross was about to go to a commercial break, Kevin Sullivan appeared and argued the Varsity Club should never have been stripped of the belts; Sullivan then insulted the collegiate Big 8 by saying no one that comes from those colleges can take orders; during the segment, Ross noted Steve Williams was from the Big 8 conference but Sullivan didn’t want to drop names; when asked about the Flair / Funk situation, Sullivan sided with Funk; included Ross conducting an interview with Teddy Long in which Long said he had a surprise and – though fired as a referee – he had plans to be around for a long time; Long then showed a vignette of his childhood friend, Norman (Norman’s debut); featured footage of Rick Steiner sustaining a shoulder injury at Music City Showdown at the hands of Sullivan; featured a video package on the Dynamic Dudes to the tune of “Iko Iko;” included pre-taped comments by Ricky Steamboat on his loss of the world title in which he said he wanted to work his way back to a future title shot; featured an ad for the Music City Showdown home video:

NWA US Champion Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy defeated Lee Scott & Cougar Jay at 2:05 when Gordy pinned Scott following a double team powerbomb move; prior to the bout, pre-taped comments from Lex Luger were shown in which he said he was going after NWA US Champion Michael Hayes and no one would stop him; Hayes & Gordy used Lynard Skynard’s “Freebird” as their theme music; after the contest, Ross conducted an interview with Hayes & Gordy about Luger’s challenge to face Hayes in a Badstreet Match and the Freebirds’ involvement in the NWA Tag Team Title tournament
The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) defeated Tom Branch & Dewayne Bruce when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Branch following a clothesline at the 14-second mark; Paul Ellering joined Ross on commentary for the match and said the Road Warriors were scared to face the Samoan Swat Team and that’s why they were facing the Freebirds in the opening round of the NWA Tag Team Tournament; after the bout, Ross conducted an interview with the Road Warriors in which they said they wanted the belts back and didn’t step down from the challenge of the SST
Scott Steiner defeated Kevin Sullivan (w/ Paul E. Dangerously) via reverse decision at 3:16; Sullivan originally won the match with a roll up after Steiner hit the ringpost shoulder-first but the referee changed the call after Sullivan tried to attack Steiner with a steel chair after the match, with NWA US Tag Team Champion Eddie Gilbert then coming out to make the save
Terry Funk fought Troy Aldridge to a no contest; prior to the bout, Funk cut an in-ring pomo on the NWA and NWA World Champion Ric Flair not seeing him as a title contender and that was why he was in the ring with the least experienced wrestler so he could work his way up from the bottom; Funk then gave Aldridge a chance to leave and slapped him across the face when he didn’t; after Funk slapped him a second time, even harder, Aldridge said he would walk out of the match; Funk then shook his hand before attacking him from behind and assaulted him around ringside to close the broadcast

5/20/89 – featured an opening announcement by Jim Ross that NWA World Champion Ric Flair had been released from traction and was recovering at home and that Ross would be speaking with Flair’s doctor the following week; included Ross conducting an interview with NWA US Tag Team Champion Eddie Gilbert, who wished Flair a speedy recovery so he could come back and get revenge on Terry Funk; the two then watched footage of Rick & Scott Steiner with Dr. Patrick Harvey as Harvey assessed the ruptured bicep Rick sustained at Music City Showdown and hoped to get Rick healthy enough to be back in the ring by June; featured a vignette promoting the debut of Brian Pillman to the tune of Yellow’s “Oh Yeah;” included pre-taped comments from Johnny & Davey Rich in which they challenged the winners of the NWA Tag Team Title tournament and wished Flair a speedy recovery (the debut of the Rich cousins); featured an ad for the Music City Showdown home video; included an ad for the Best of Starrcade 83-87 home video; featured a video package on Shane Douglas & Johnny Ace to the tune of Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy;” included Ross conducting an interview with Teddy Long in which he said he hoped Flair never returned to the ring and then showed another vignette of his friend Norman:

NWA Tag Team Champions Rick & Scott Steiner defeated Cactus Jack & Rick Fargo at 4:53 when Scott pinned Fargo following the Frankensteiner; prior to the bout, the Steiners let two young fans sit on the ring steps and hold the title belts for the match; after the bout, Fargo and Cactus began fighting, with Cactus throwing Fargo to the floor and hitting an elbow drop from the apron to the concrete (Jack’s debut)
