Bob Backlund (w/ Owen Hart) defeated WWF World Champion Bret Hart (w/ Davey Boy Smith) to win the title at 34:44 in a match where the participants’ seconds would have to throw in the towel to end the match; Stu & Helen Hart were shown sitting ringside before the bout; during the contest, Bret’s wife Julie and their kids were shown watching on from their balcony seat; at the 25-minute mark, Smith was knocked out while chasing an interfering Owen around the ring; moments later, Owen appeared to cry as Bret was caught in the Crossface Chicken Wing; Owen then pleaded with his parents, sitting ringside, to stop the match or Bret’s arm would be broken; Owen eventually opened the barricade, with Stu & Helen standing ringside for several more minutes before Helen threw in the towel to end the match; immediately after the match ended, Owen slid in the ring, held up Bret’s towel in celebration, and then ran backstage, quickly revealing that his emotion for Bret’s health was fake; moments later, Bret was helped backstage by his parents, Pat Patterson, and other officials as Backlund was awarded the title; Todd Pettingill then conducted a backstage interview with Owen, who said it was the greatest Thanksgiving of his life because Bret was no longer the champion; Owen then said he would go on to be a WWF Tag Team, IC, and World Champion and, unlike Bret, he would never surrender
