NWA National Tag Team Title History

– A 9-team one-night tournament was held to determine the first champions. Prior to the finals, Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts defeated Jack & Jerry Brisco and Steve Keirn & Terry Taylor and Robert Fuller & Stan Frazier defeated the Wild Samoans and Ole & Gene Anderson.

– National Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals: Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts (w/ Michael Hayes) defeated Robert Fuller & Stan Frazier to win the titles; the winners also won a trophy and $20,000

– Ted Dibiase & Stan Frazier defeated National Tag Team Champions Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts to win the titles

1/31/81; Atlanta, GA
– Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts defeated National Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase & Stan Frazier to win the titles

– Ted Dibiase & Steve O defeated National Tag Team Champions Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts to win the titles

– Terry Gordy & Jimmy Snuka defeated National Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase & Steve O to win the titles

9/27/81; Atlanta, GA; Omni
– Michael Hayes & Otis Sistrunk (sub. for Kevin Von Erich) defeated National Tag Team Champions Terry Gordy & Jimmy Snuka to win the titles in a No DQ steel cage match

1981: The titles were vacated when Sistrunk quit the company. A 12-team one-night tournament was held to determine the new champions. Prior to the finals, Bob & Brad Armstrong defeated the Sheepherders and Kevin Sullivan & Wayne Farris and Mr. Saito & Mr. Fuji defeated Ted & Jerry Oates and Ray Candy & Buzz Sawyer.

– National Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals: Bob & Brad Armstrong defeated Mr. Saito & Mr. Fuji to win the titles

1/22/82; Columbus, GA
– The Masked Superstar & the Super Destroyer defeated National Tag Team Champions Bob & Brad Armstrong to win the titles

– 3/82: The Masked Superstar gave his half of the titles to Big John Studd.

7/2/82; Chattanooga, TN
– Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy defeated the Super Destroyer & Big John Studd to win the titles

8/29/82; Atlanta, GA; Omni
– The Wild Samoans (w/ Sonny King) defeated National Tag Team Champions Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy to win the titles

1/83: The Wild Samoans vacated the titles when they left Georgia for the WWF.

1/28/84: The Road Warriors were awarded the titles when Buzz Sawyer was fired.

– King Kong Bundy & the Masked Superstar defeated National Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) to win the titles

5/84: The titles were vacated when the Masked Superstar left Georgia for Japan. His absence was explained by saying he was injured. A one-night eight-team tournament was held to determine the new champions. Prior to the finals, the Road Warriors defeated Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen and the Junkyard Dog & Sweet Brown Sugar defeated Mid-Atlantic TV Champion Tully Blanchard & Tommy Rogers and Ted Dibiase & the Spoiler.

– National Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals: The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) defeated the Junkyard Dog & Sweet Brown Sugar to win the titles

7/4/84; Columbus, GA
– Ron Garvin & Jerry Oates defeated National Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors to win the titles

– Rip Rogers & Ted Oates defeated National Tag Team Champions Ron Garvin & Jerry Oates to win the titles

11/84: The titles were vacated when Tim Horner sustained an injury. A 12-team one-night tournament was held to determine the new champions. Prior to the finals, Scott & Bill Irwin defeated Tommy Rich & Randy Savage and Jerry Lawler & Jimmy Valiant and Brad Armstrong & Jacques Rougeau defeated Bob Roop & the Italian Stallion and Ted Oates & Rip Rogers.

– National Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals: Scott & Bill Irwin defeated Brad Armstrong & Jacques Rougeau to win the titles

1/11/85; Cleveland, OH
– Ole Anderson & Thunderbolt Patterson defeated National Tag Team Champions Scott & Bill Irwin to win the titles

4/28/85; Charlotte, NC; Coliseum
– Ole & Arn Anderson defeated Thunderbolt Patterson & Manny Fernandez; stipulations stated if Ole’s team won then Arn would win Thunderbolt’s half of the National Tag Team Champions and if Thunderbolt’s team won then Fernandez would win the belt

2/86: The titles were vacated when Ole Anderson was injured by Dusty Rhodes and the Road Warriors.
