Prior to the finals, Bob & Brad Armstrong defeated the Sheepherders and Kevin Sullivan & Wayne Farris and Mr. Saito & Mr. Fuji defeated Ted & Jerry Oates and Ray Candy & Buzz Sawyer.

Prior to the finals, the Road Warriors defeated Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen and the Junkyard Dog & Sweet Brown Sugar defeated Mid-Atlantic TV Champion Tully Blanchard & Tommy Rogers and Ted Dibiase & the Spoiler.
