Prior to the finals, Larry Zbyszko defeated Brett Wayne, Tommy Rich, the Masked Superstar, and Stan Hansen and Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Bob Roop and Arn Anderson.

– Buddy Landell (w/ JJ Dillon) pinned National Heavyweight Champion Terry Taylor to win the title when Dillon grabbed Taylor’s foot as the champion attempted a superplex, with Landell landing on top for the win; Dillon’s head was heavily bandaged following his match earlier in the night
– 1/4/86: Dusty Rhodes was announced the new National Heavyweight Title following a phantom match in Albuquerque, NM after Buddy Landell was fired from the promotion.

– Tully Blanchard (w/ JJ Dillon) pinned National Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes (w/ Baby Doll) to win the title after hitting him with a foreign object given to him by NWA World Champion Ric Flair, who provided guest commentary for the match, as Rhodes attempted to bring Blanchard back into the ring with a back suplex; late in the match, Rhodes kicked out of the slingshot suplex; after the contest, Flair entered the ring to celebrate with Blanchard and NWA TV Champion Arn Anderson; moments later, Baby Doll attacked Flair with repeated punches; Dillon then grabbed Baby Doll by the hair and yanked her to the mat, with Baby Doll slapping him until she was tackled by both Anderson and Blanchard; moments later, Flair went up to the top rope as Baby Doll was held down but NWA US Champion Magnum TA ran out to clear the ring and make the save; Magnum was then joined by Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion Sam Houston, Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson
