1/16/93 – featured an opening segment in which Bill Watts announced the finals of the US Title Contender Tournament held later in the show would now be for the title rather than a title shot since WCW US Champion Rick Rude was still injured, he hadn’t defended the title since Nov. 14 and would not be returning to the ring until March; Watts also announced he had suspended his son Erik pending an investigation behind what happened between Erik and Arn Anderson at a Charlotte gas station; included a vignette in which WCW World Champion Big Van Vader challenged Sting to face him in the White Castle of Fear; featured footage of amateur video from a Charlotte gas station of Arn Anderson attacking Erik Watts after Watts signed an autograph for a fan, with Watts then fighting back, further injuring Anderson’s knee, and applying the STF until police arrived to the scene and arrested him; Tony Schiavone then interviewed Watts backstage about the footage; included Schiavone hosting a “WCW Up Close” segment in which he spoke with Steve Austin & Brian Pillman in which they said they wanted WCW/NWA Tag Team Champions Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match, noting anyone could get lucky in a one-fall match; featured the announcement Cactus Jack & the Barbarian would face WCW World Champion Big Van Vader & Paul Orndorff the following night on The Main Event:

WCW US Championship Tournament Finals: Dustin Rhodes defeated WCW/NWA Tag Team Champion Ricky Steamboat via count-out at 15:00 when, after the referee was knocked down from a collision, Barry Windham interfered and dropped Steamboat with a DDT on the floor; after the commercial break, Jim Ross showed Rhodes how the match ended and he said that’s not how he wanted to win the title and walked off to find Steamboat

Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson defeated SMW Tag Team Champions Tom Prichard & Stan Lane (w/ Jim Cornette & Bobby Eaton) via disqualification in an impromptu non-title match at 6:12 when Eaton interfered as Morton had Prichard covered following the double dropkick; moments earlier, Cornette, Eaton, Lane & Prichard came through the crowd to interrupt Ross, with Cornette saying he was being ignored by Bill Watts; moments later, Watts came out with Cornette saying he walked out of WCW for problems smaller than Watts and said he and Lane walked out of WCW 2 years ago because the people running the company tried to make the Midnight Express look like a bunch of idiots; Cornette then ranted about how Lane & Prichard won the SMW Tag Team titles and had been feuding with Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson and was upset to see Morton & Gibson being promoted by WCW; Cornette then asked for a public apology for trying to make he and his men look stupid; Watts cut Cornette off and said he had been working alongside Bob Armstrong in SMW and had clearance to show the footage he showed; Watts then said Cornette and his men didn’t work for him so he couldn’t fine or fire them but the next time they interrupted his show they would be thrown in jail; Cornette then said Morton & Gibson should be thrown in jail because they killed the show’s rating the previous week; Morton & Gibson then confronted Cornette and his men, with Watts then proposing the two teams settle it in the ring then and there and called for a referee; some of Cornette’s comments were muted in post-production, including his threatening to sue Watts and WCW; after the contest, Gibson was thrown to the floor and Cornette, Eaton, Lane, & Prichard fought off several enhancement wrestlers while also assaulting Morton in the ring (Cornette & Lane’s surprise return after more than a 2-year absence; Prichard’s surprise debut; Morton’s in-ring return after a 6-month absence; Gibson’s in-ring return after an 18-month absence)
